A Montana Grow-Supply Store Finally Gets the Online Home It Deserved
Harvest Techs — taking the largest garden, greenhouse and hydroponics selection north of Denver from a single counter in Billings to a custom eCommerce platform built for home growers and commercial cultivators alike.
Overview
Harvest Techs is a Montana institution among growers. Operating out of Billings and Butte, it stocks the largest selection of garden and greenhouse supplies north of Denver — high-quality soils and amendments, organic and synthetic nutrients, hydroponic and aquaponic systems, grow lights, ventilation, climate control, timers, tanks, and the kind of new-and-used gear that serious cultivators hunt for.
What sets the business apart isn’t the shelves; it’s the staff. Walk in with a struggling crop or a half-built indoor tent and you’ll leave with a diagnosis and a plan. That advisory relationship is the brand. The problem was that all of it lived inside two physical stores — and the site at harvesttechs.com was a placeholder.
The goal of this engagement was not just to put the catalog online. It was to translate the in-store expertise — the matching of grower to product, problem to solution — into an eCommerce experience that could serve a hobbyist buying their first nutrient bottle and a commercial operation reordering by the pallet, without making either feel like they were in the wrong shop.
The Challenge
The business was healthy offline. The issue was that none of its strengths — selection, advice, repeat trade — had any digital expression. Starting from a placeholder site, we had to build the whole thing while protecting what already worked.
No transactional storefront
the live domain was a ‘coming soon’ page; every sale and product question depended on a phone call or a drive to the counter.
Two very different buyers, one shelf
a first-time home grower and a commercial cultivation facility need completely different journeys, pricing and quantities.
Catalog organised by product, not by problem
customers think ‘my seedlings are stretching’ or ‘I’m setting up a 4×4 tent,’ not in SKU terms.
Expertise locked in people’s heads
the knowledgeable, honest advice that earns loyalty couldn’t scale beyond store hours.
No reorder or trade workflow
commercial growers buy on a cycle, but there were no accounts, saved carts or bulk pricing to retain that business online.
Our Approach
We started where the value was — the counter. We shadowed real conversations: the questions the team asks, how they steer a nervous beginner away from over-buying, the shorthand they use with commercial regulars. Those conversations became the blueprint for the site’s information architecture, not the product spreadsheet.
The core architectural decision was to build the catalog along two axes at once — by product category (nutrients, lighting, media, climate, hydroponic systems) and by grower intent and grow stage (starting seeds, vegetative growth, flowering, pest & disease, full-tent kits). The same product is reachable from either path.
Rather than force the business onto an off-the-shelf template, we went custom. Our eCommerce development team led discovery, taxonomy and UX, while the build drew on our Laravel development expertise for the commerce engine and account logic. To scale the advisory relationship, we layered in a guided product-advisor and an AI chatbot trained on the team’s own grow knowledge.
Because two buyer types meant two pricing realities, we wrapped pricing in a custom layer: retail visitors see standard pricing, while approved commercial accounts see tiered pricing, bulk breaks and fast reorder. The plan was staged so Harvest Techs could launch lean and grow into B2B and multi-location features without a rebuild.
Solution Delivered
The new harvesttechs.com opens with three clear ways in: shop by category, shop by what you’re growing / your grow stage, and shop by setup (complete tent and room kits). None of these paths dead-ends in a generic product wall.
Product pages carry the context that used to come from the counter: what the product does, what stage it’s for, what it pairs with, common mistakes, and a ‘growers also buy’ block that completes a setup rather than padding a cart. A guided advisor walks newcomers to a sensible starter list, while the AI assistant fields ‘why is this happening to my plant’ questions around the clock.
For commercial cultivators we built a separate ordering lane: account login, tiered and bulk pricing, saved equipment lists, one-click reorder of regular consumables, and quote requests the team can approve and convert from the admin.
Underpinning it all: clean, search-friendly category and intent pages, fast mobile performance for shopping from the greenhouse, and a content hub of grow guides that doubles as customer help and an organic traffic engine.
