A Social Game Layer for Global Football
Tactix — a real-time football prediction and fantasy sports iOS app where Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and Saudi Pro League matches become friend-to-friend contests.
Overview
Tactix is a football prediction app that turns every match into a personal contest. Fans pick the winner, predict the score and earn points for accuracy across the world’s top competitions — Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Saudi Pro League. Players can challenge friends in private leagues or climb a global leaderboard against fans worldwide.
Emizentech delivered Tactix end-to-end as a flagship project under our iOS app development services and on-demand app development practice — covering product discovery, native iOS engineering, the backend, real-time sports-data integration and App Store launch. The product is now live globally on the App Store with iOS 15.1+ support.
The Challenge
Building a global, real-time prediction app for elite football required us to solve product, data and scale problems together:
Reliable, low-latency live match data across four major leagues — kick-off times, lineups, scores, goals, half-time and full-time states.
A points system that rewards accuracy, supports tie-breakers and feels fair when matches end in unusual scorelines.
Real-time global and friend-group leaderboards that update during the match without overloading the device or the backend.
A delightful, fast prediction flow — picking a result must take seconds, not minutes.
Heavy load spikes around kick-off windows for marquee matches (Manchester derby, Clásico, etc.) — the system has to scale predictably.
Strict App Store guidelines around prediction-style apps to ensure clear separation from gambling.
Our Approach
We opened with a focused product-discovery sprint to lock the core loop: predict, watch, win, brag. Everything else was cut. The prediction flow was prototyped and tested until a user could place a full match prediction in under five seconds — that number was non-negotiable. Swift with SwiftUI and Combine gave us the performance headroom for smooth, real-time UI updates without draining older iPhones. The backend was built event-driven from day one: ingest the live data feed, run the scoring engine, push leaderboard deltas via WebSockets, and handle the traffic spike when eighty thousand fans lock in their Clásico predictions at the same time. Redis kept leaderboards fast under that load. Compliance was treated as a design constraint, not an afterthought — the App Store’s prediction-app guidelines shaped the feature scope early, which is why Tactix passed review on the first submission without a single rejection.
Our Solution
We designed Tactix as a fast, glance-friendly product. The home screen surfaces the next 24 hours of fixtures across the user’s leagues, with one-tap predictions. Behind the scenes, an event-driven backend ingests live match data, recalculates points the moment a match ticks, and pushes leaderboard deltas to the client over WebSockets — so a user watching a match sees their rank shift in real time.
Private leagues add a social loop on top: invite friends with a link, lock in your predictions, and watch the group leaderboard tilt match by match. The app is monetisation-ready (premium leagues, branded competitions, sponsor placements) without ever crossing into gambling mechanics — a critical requirement for the App Store.
Technology Stack
We picked a stack that prioritises real-time performance, predictable scaling and a tight feedback loop on every release — the same engineering rigor we apply across our wider mobile app development practice.
Swift + SwiftUI
Native iOS app with Combine, async/await and MVVM architecture for a smooth, responsive UI.
WebSockets + Firebase
Real-time leaderboard deltas and live match events pushed instantly via WebSockets and Firebase Realtime Database.
Node.js (Nest)
Event-driven backend with REST and WebSocket APIs, powering the scoring engine and league logic.
PostgreSQL + Redis
PostgreSQL for users and leagues; Redis for in-memory live leaderboard calculations at kick-off scale.
Sports Data API
Tier-1 football data provider integration for live lineups, scores, goal events and match states.
Auth — Apple + Google
Sign in with Apple, Google OAuth and email/password with App Store compliance baked in.
Push Notifications
APNs with topic-based subscriptions per league and match — kick-off, half-time and result alerts.
AWS + CI/CD
ECS, RDS, ElastiCache and CloudFront with GitHub Actions pipelines for reliable, zero-downtime deploys.
Firebase Analytics
Crashlytics crash reporting and custom retention dashboards tracking matchweek-over-matchweek engagement.
Figma + Motion Design
Prediction UI with large touch targets, haptic feedback and a motion system tuned for every correct pick.
Scoring + League Engine
Custom points engine with tie-breakers, accuracy tracking and private league management across seasons.
Key Features We Built
Every feature in Tactix is built around two emotions: anticipation before kick-off, and bragging rights after.
One-Tap Match Predictions
Pick the winner and the exact score in seconds. Lock-in is automatic at kick-off so users never miss a match because they were busy.
Multi-League Coverage
Live support for the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Saudi Pro League — with fixtures, lineups, results and standings.
Private Leagues with Friends
Create a league, share an invite link and compete with mates across a season or a single matchweek.

Unlockable badges for milestones (perfect matchweek, derby specialist, underdog caller) that make the long season more rewarding.
Sponsor & Premium League Slots
An architecture ready for branded competitions and premium leagues — without any gambling mechanics, fully compliant with the App Store.
Glimpses of Tactix — Football Prediction & Fantasy App
Our Development Approach
1 Discovery & Product Definition
We ran a focused product-discovery sprint to lock the core loop (predict → watch → win → brag) and define the leagues, scoring rules and social mechanics for v1.
2UX & Visual Design
Our designers prototyped the prediction flow obsessively until users could place a full match prediction in under five seconds. Motion and haptics were tuned to make every correct pick feel rewarding.
3Native iOS Engineering
Two-week sprints, modular SwiftUI screens, automated unit/UI tests and a TestFlight cohort for every release. Real devices ranged from older iPhones to the latest Pro models.
4Real-Time Backend & Sports Data
We built an event-driven backend that ingests provider data, applies our scoring engine, updates leaderboards in Redis and pushes deltas via WebSockets — all hardened for kick-off-time traffic spikes.
5Compliance, Launch & Iteration
We worked with the client to pass App Store review on the first attempt, set up store listings and ASO keywords, then moved into a continuous-improvement retainer informed by analytics.
Results and Outcomes
Tactix launched as a polished v1 with a distinctive social hook — and quickly carved out a space among football fans who want competition without the complexity of fantasy squads. Extending it to Android, web or a white-label build is now a scoping question rather than a rebuild, which is why teams at this stage hire dedicated developers to run those tracks in parallel.
Live globally on the iOS App Store with iOS 15.1+ support.
Sub-second leaderboard updates during live matches, validated under simulated kick-off-time load.
Average prediction time well under five seconds — well below the team’s target.
Strong matchweek-over-matchweek retention driven by the friend-league hook and push-notification cadence.
Architecture ready for Android, web companion and white-label deployments for sponsors and broadcasters.
Passed Apple’s review on the first submission thanks to careful compliance and feature scoping.
